Airlines that fly from London to New York

New York is Heathrow Airport's most popular destination. The route is served by six different airlines: American Airlines, British Airways, Air India, Delta Air Lines, Kuwait Airways and Virgin Atlantic. You can also fly from Gatwick with Norwegian Long Haul (Norwegian Air Shuttle) and from London City with British Airways.

Direct flights are available every day. American Airlines offer up to 17 daily direct flights between New York and London, as do British Airways. BA's all-business class route from London City isn't strictly direct: it lands briefly at Shannon Airport so its passengers can go through security pre-clearance, skipping the customs queue upon arrival in New York.

Terminal Information

Flights to New York leave from four terminals at London Heathrow, so scrutinise your boarding pass before arriving to avoid any mishaps.

Air India and Kuwait Airways both leave from Terminal 4. This is a large terminal with plenty of high end shops to browse, as well as a few fast food restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat. It's an extra stop on the tube and on the Heathrow Express, so be careful when heading to the airport.

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Virgin Atlantic, and some British Airways flights leave from Terminal 3. This is another huge terminal packed with shops and places to eat: including a caviar bar. The majority of British Airways flights to New York leave from Terminal 5, Heathrow's newest (and chicest) terminal. Don't miss Gordon Ramsay's restaurant, Plane Food.

United flights leave from Terminal 2, (aka Queen's Terminal). This is Heathrow's oldest terminal: it closed in 2009 for refurbishment and only reopened in 2014. There's the expected selection of duty free shops, high end brands, and restaurants such as Leon.

Flights to New York usually leave from Gatwick's South Terminal. There's a huge range of shops to browse including British favourites Cath Kidston, Harrods and Joules. There's a selection of bars, cafes, and restaurants too including Nandos and McDonalds.

London City only has one terminal. Passengers can enjoy free Wi-Fi before flying. There are five places to grab a bite to eat: Rhubarb, Caffe Nero, Espressamente Illy, Panopolis, and The City Bar & Grill. If you want to buy some last minute souvenirs there's a duty free shop, a Boots, a Links of London and a WH Smith. Pay attention to the departure boards: London City is a silent airport, and no announcements are made.

Practical Information

It's recommended that you arrive at the airport three hours before your flight's scheduled departure time.

In terms of documentation, your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay in the USA. If you're visiting for less than 90 days, and are a British citizen, you might not need to obtain a visa. The Visa Waiver Programme applies for most visits (leisure, some business, and passing through) but may not apply if you have been arrested, or if you have had your passport extended by a British embassy. If in doubt contact your nearest American consulate for advice.

What to expect in New York

New York City won't put too much of a dent in your bank balance. Not only is the dollar weak against the pound, restaurant prices are lower than London and consumer goods are a little cheaper too. The weather in New York can be extreme: during the summer temperatures can reach 29 °C, and in winter it can drop as low as -3°C. New York is five hours behind the UK, so bear this in mind before ringing your friends.
